I’m getting back into radio technologies. Listening to various frequencies and scanner the spectrum for things to decode.
Suddenly, I heard a signal that sounded like data being passed along with a metronome. I looked at the frequency and say it was 137.1925 Mhz, this seemed familiar to me. Very familiar.
Around the year 2000 when I first got a Playstaion 2 I immediately installed linux on it. My first foray into installing my own non-windows or Mac OS on any box, and it was a PITA, but I got it working.
Next I wonder what magical hacking, cracking and phreaking I could accomplish with this new found OS, naive I was. Regardless I still wondered plundered and wandered until I found a satellite tracking software. I thought Predict, as it was called, could let me tap into the satellites and get valuable data, but obviously that was not the case.
Cut to 2019 when I randomly decided to get an RTL-SDR to scan the airwaves like I used to in the mid 1990s with my various CB radios and a couple unidens, Bearcats and an ICOM R3, and behold a pale horse.. wrong story… Behold, a USB dongle radio signal Rx device that I could use a SDR (Software Defined Radio) with and see the waterfalls I missed from days of yore.
Piecing together my various thoughts I quickly realized that 137.9125 (and others in the 137-138 range) was the downlink frequency for a satellite. Specifically NOAA 18 in this case.
Next up, install a DDE plugin into the SDR#, install Orbitron and then WxtoImg (deprecated software but still the best out there). Now we’re cooking with radiation!
Ps… I can also track aircraft ADSB with this set-up.
Next up is for me to move the antennas to a better location for a clearer and higher viewpoint of the sky so I’m not missing over half of the signals being pushed out by the satellites, and to try to achieve 250 Nautical Miles or more of aircraft tracking.
